NORITAKA TATEHANA + IRIS VAN HERPEN, 2015 On the 10th of March, Iris and I collaborated for a show for the Fall/Winter 2015 Paris Fashion Week. Iris Van Herpen and I met through our mutual friend, Daphne Guinness. Since I had been away from the fashion scene for the past few years, I was able to challenge with a very refreshing sense of experience in the last six months. It’s strange for me to say, but Iris’s requests were not suitable as shoes in terms of structure, but I found this to be very challenging. Iris looks very gentle yet she is a very strong person who spares no effort to realize her vision. Now there are things which could only be co-produced by the two of us. We have learned a lot through our experience this spring and we consider this as a starting point. I would like you all to look forward to our future development.
ABOUT THE SHOES We spent most of the 6 months exchanging opinions and the actual operation time was very short. In her process of creation, Iris shows a sense of femininity and her intuitiveness is absolutely attractive. Yet what she creates are, on the contrary, strongly constructive and intriguing. The crystal shaped platforms became the most important piece we’ve created for this show. Without the support of Shio and Kenjiro of the MOA Creation, who bear the whole responsibility for my 3D sculpture works, it was impossible to realize these shoes into actual forms. Needless to say, to amalgamate the distinctive features created by the irregularity of craftsmanship and the mathematically precise forms produced by the computer required an unimaginable amount of “deconstructive” effort.
